I will therefore set up some dialectics in this review, to test the strength of his arguments. And who knows, what synthesis may lie on the far horizon? But from the start, McIntosh' courage to tackle this thorny subject of evolutionary progress and purpose should be applauded. I trust his intentions of giving science its due—as he wrote in the letter accompanying the review copy he kindly sent me a few weeks ago—and this review will try to assess how far he has succeeded in this. Allow me to sometimes transcend the boundaries of a single book review by including Wilber's ideas on the subject, to get at the heart of the integral view of evolution.
