Not many of his readers, even those of his students who have studied all of this books, will be familiar with the notion of "involution", which was introduced in the nineteenth century by some spiritual philosophers as the counterpart to the more familiar concept of evolution. As readers of this website will know, Wilber's understanding of and use of the term "evolution" is debatable, and the reason for this will become clear when we examine his use of the opposite term "involution". Both of these two notions are intimately connected to each other. One could even say that Ken Wilber believes in a certain view of evolution because he also believes in involution—a process that supposedly preceded both the Big Bang and the subsequent processes of cosmological, biological and cultural evolution.
