Over in Greece, around the same time, the Presocratic (“before Socrates”) philosophers (often called “proto-scientists”) began proposing various “substances” as being the arche (archetype) or fundamental substance of creation. By the 5th-century BCE, philosophers such as Leucippus and Democritus (c. 460–370 BCE) were asserting materialism, in contradiction to Plato's Idealism, with the “Laughing Philosopher,” the “father of modern science” (Democritus) asserting: “Nothing exists but atoms and the void (or empty space); everything else is opinion.” No laughing matter, this materialism business.
