I remember my father, Warren, suggesting that a hand calculator, though quite remarkable, shouldn’t necessarily replace the slide-ruler that we were currently using in my math classes at Notre Dame high school. I knew he had a point, but I also realized that one could make the same argument for not discarding an abacus, which he also occasionally used.

In Plato’s Phaedrus we learn in the arbitrarily structured dialogue that Socrates argues against writing things down lest one must rely solely on something apart from their own memory.
