The word as it is commonly used and understood in the West is attributed to René Descartes. He defined it as “an intrinsic property of all thoughts.” An 18th-century French encyclopedia defined consciousness as “the opinion or internal feeling that we ourselves have from what we do.” John Locke defined consciousness as “the perception of what passes in a man's own mind.” In recent years, the meaning of the word has widened considerably. Some in the quantum physics community argue that the universe is conscious. This notion makes consciousness both an anthropomorphic and cosmic phenomenon.
